The AIDS crisis, which emerged in the early 1980s, affected communities worldwide, including Lynn. During this time, AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), caused by the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), led to a significant public health crisis, marked by widespread fear, stigma, and loss of life. One hundred and fifty people died of AIDS in Lynn between 1987 and 2022. The pain of the AIDS crisis was acute at gay bars, which attracted many people from across the North Shore. Lynn’s LGBTQ+ community responded to the AIDS crisis with programs for prevention and support for those affected. Organizations included: Greater Lynn AIDS Taskforce; Cornerstone for Life; Strongest Link; Positive People of Lynn; Gay and Bi Men’s Health Program; The Center for Addictive Behaviors; Lynn Community Health Center; Project COPE; Prism LGBT Health; Lynn VNA; and several Lynn churches.
