1973 - Robert Dow, gay rights pioneer
Lynn native Robert Dow is an early advocate for gay issues in New England and president of the Homophile Union of Boston, HUB. He lost his job at Lynn's J.J. Nissen Baking Corp after advocating for gay rights during a TV interview. As reported in the Gay Community News, Nissen's fired him because they were afraid that his political and civil rights activism might give them a bad name.
