At the annual June Flag Raising outside City Hall Mayor Flanagan said “Events like Orlando are made to make people afraid. We are not going to stop because of that. We are going to raise our flag in spite of that.”

2012 - Lesbian T-Shirt sparks controversy
A dress code debate ensued at the School Committee over a student at Lynn English High School wearing a T-shirt that said, "all the cool girls are lesbians.” The debate involved Mayor Judy Flanagan Kennedy, Principal Thomas Strangle, Rick Starbard, Maria Carrasco, and Charlie Gallo.

2010 - First LGBTQ Flag Raising in Lynn
More than a dozen people gathered outside of Lynn City Hall for the first raising of the gay pride flag. The flag marks 40 years of gay pride in the city. Muise said his goal for raising the flag was to let people know that Lynn is gay-friendly.

2009 - Mayor Kennedy by 27
Angered by Mayor Clancy's successful push to roll back closing hours for bars in Lynn, bar owners, gays and straights, started a petition and later actively supported the write in campaign for Judy Flanagan Kennedy. Kennedy won by 27 votes, becoming the city's first female mayor but did not reverse the rollback once she was in office.
